Dr. Richard Freedman- Medical Director
Dr. Freedman has been in practice for 38 years. He moved here after graduating from the Univ. of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. He was born and raised in Pa. His enthusiasm for building relationships and bonds between his clients and patients, is as strong now as it was in the beginning. His professional areas of interest involve surgery, dentistry, ear disease, rehab therapy and orthopedics. He is an online consultant to veterinarians all across the country. His non professional interests include target shooting, vintage British autos, boating, dancing, and personal training. He has 2 adult children, a daughter and a son, about whom he is proud beyond description.
Emily Whitmore, DVM
Born and raised in Charlottesville, Dr.Whitmore is excited to be back in her hometown after spending many years of schooling in other parts of the state. She is an alumna of Western Albemarle High School and the College of William and Mary. She received her veterinary training at Virginia Tech and then worked at a practice in Martinsville, VA. Dr.Whitmore is very excited to be back in Cavalier Country! In her free time she enjoys being active, hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains with her hound mix Kona; playing soccer, running, especially in the Women’s 4 miler, working out in the wee hours of the morning with the Seal Team PT and traveling to exotic locations.

Cherish Kaylor– Practice Manager
Originally from Hickory, North Carolina, Cherish has been in the veterinary field for over 17 years. You may see her up front answering the phone or in the back assisting the doctors and technicians. She is now taking on the role of Practice Manager and continues to grow with her team. On her days off, she enjoys being outdoors, hiking or swimming and skiing in the winter with her son, Brooks. She also has a Chihuahua named Bianca!
Ashleigh Mathews-Lead LVT
Ashleigh graduated from Blue Ridge Community College in 2011 with her Associates degree in Veterinary technology. She has been working here as an LVT since then. She currently lives in Waynesboro with her Husband Casey and two German Shepherds Saint and Champ. In her spare time she loves spending time outdoors with her family.
I have been an LVT and have worked at Avhcc since 1999. I currently live with my husband, Derek, of 18 years, my 9 year old daughter, Cara, and my 17 year old cat, Nova. I like to knit, do crossword puzzles and bird watch.
Emily Abramson, LVT
Emily was born and raised in Arkansas, in the small town of Holly Grove, population 500. She earned her B.A. in Psychology from University of Virginia in 2007 and completed the LVT program at Blue Ridge Community College in May of 2013.
In her spare time, Emily enjoys horseback riding and traveling with her dog Savannah.
Jean Parra- Lead CSR
Jean comes to us from Northern Virginia where she worked as a receptionist and vet assistant at Burke Animal Clinic. She is a native Virginian who earned her BFA at Virginia Commonwealth University in Graphic Design. When not answering our phones and booking appointments, Jean enjoys spending time with her two daughters, four cats and Flint the family horse.
Katlin earned her Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Lynchburg College in 2013. She is planning on continuing her education to become a Licensed Veterinary Technician. She has lived in Charlottesville for 22 years. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family and outdoors with her boyfriend, Sam. Together they have a dog, 4 cats, a bird and a bunny!
